I have a 2001 Forester S w/58,000 miles. I recently did a complete tune-up with new Iridium spark plugs,PCV valve,Fuel Filter,K&N drop in air filter,and all fluids were changed to synthetic. Tires are inflated properly and no pulling either.I commute 90 miles a day at 65mph maintained for the most part and right now I am not using A/C. With all that I am only averaging 24 MPG ( .

Any one have any ideas to improve this mileage ???

I thought I would be getting close to 30 mpg

Has it recently gotten worse? Has it always been 24? I don't know what the forester owners are getting, that may be right on target. What is EPA highway?

 

My first guess as to a culprit would be the front O2 sensor.

Do you have a manual or automatic? The automatic should get slightly higher highway mileage. However, 24 sounds to me to be in the reasonable range.

 

Could also be that your odometer is reading slightly "long", i.e., showing fewer miles than actually traveled, which would make your mileage seem lower (I have just the opposite problem on my OBW: It reads the miles "short" which makes me think I'm getting 29-30 when I'm really getting 26-27). Try measuring your distance with a GPS instead of the odometer and see if there's any error.

 

There could also be an error in your speedo, which could be showing 65 when you are really going near 70. I can tell you from experience that when I switched from cruising at 75 to 65, I noticed a dramatic increase in my MPG. Even as little as a 3 MPH difference could cause your mileage to drop from 26 to 24 or so. Most GPS units can give you your speed as well and you can compare the GPS speed to what is indicated on your speedo.

 

Finally, when you consider the boxy shape of the Forester (as compared to the Legacy or Impreza), I don't think 24 is out of line.

 

UPDATE: Edmunds has your EPA estimate as 22/27 for auto and 21/28 for manual.

This may not be a lot of help to you but I have a 2004 2ltr manual transmission Forester and I can get between 32 to 38 mpg depending on how I drive. 24 sounds very low to me. A friend has a 2.5 auto legacy and he says he gets an average of 31 mpg.

32 to 38 mpg???!!!

That would be in England, my dear! A gallon there is 4.24 litres as opposed to the statside 3.9 litres. That would explain some of the difference. Also, the Forester in question is a 2.0, with manual transmission. That could account for 2-3%, under similar driving conditions. And more if the MT is operated with economy in mind.

Sometimes replacing your Oxygen sensor helps. I went from 15 mpg to 28-30 mpg after I replaced my Oxygen sensor.

I doubled checked everything and discovered that the bottom lip to the air filter housing (with a K & N in it) was not seated properly . I have adjusted it properly and will see if that was the culprit.

 

My forester is an automatic and the low mileage just reently surfaced.

I will replace the front O2 sensor as well so keep your fingers crossed.

New O2 sensors just came in today - both front and back . I will replace them Monday and hope that will make a difference . I will keep everyone posted on the progress .

I get 12.5 in my Dodge up here in Laramie.. Stupid elevation.. (7200').. I wish I got 24MPG! USed to get 17 in town, now I get 12

Be glad for our elevation. It keeps all the flatlanders away.

 

BTW, o/t, but how much is gas in Laramie these days? I used to find the best prices were either at the Diamond Shamrock at exit 310 or at the Conoco down on 3rd street.
