I have the pleasure of owning the 99 gt 2.5 engine which already blew the hg's at about 65k. The local dealer replaced them with SOA kicking in about $1000 and about $500 out of my pocket. Now i am dealing with a loss of power up hills and have researched the issue here and found one possible answer of replacing the fuel filters. My car fixing friend had one question for me before we get started. He wanted to know are there two filters or one and are they mounted on the frame or inside the tank. It would be easier for me to post the question here than to get it to his warehouse and get it up in the air to find out. Some of you would say just look but I am not to savvy when it comes to cars, I never had to be until I owned this car. If any one has any other solutions to this problem I would love to hear them. I am aware of a possible clogged CAT which will be our next target if the fuel filter(s) do not help. One last question, while I am posting anyway.... if you werent going to use synthetic oil which would be your next best choice (im in PA, within a month it will be below freezing on my hour commute to work in the mornings, if that needs to be concidered with the oil type).

My power came back when I got my new cats.

 

When my fuel filter was clogged the car would darn near stall when I'd accelerate from a stop, but had no problem on hills or merging on the freeway, etc.

if i am not mistaking the fuel filter on yours is the same spot as mine, under the hood behind the windshield washer tank. i have been using blended oil which is half oil, half synthetic and priced in between the two.

Yep the fuel filter is where legacy2.5 said and it couldn't be simpler to replace. Might also want to check plugs, wires, and air filter. Also run some Seafoam through the tank and pour some through the PCV. If all that doesn't help then consider the cats.

What damages cats (other than dogs)? Is there an average lifespan (not 9 lives) and any way of ensuring long life?

Just do what I did and gut the cat. WAIT! I forgot it makes it sound like a tin can full of rocks. Don't do that. Good luck with the cat situation. You might have sticking valves. Change your oil and use a good fuel treatment for the next three tankfulls and use something like X1R in your oil.

thanks for the help guys, i guess i shoulda looked under the hood before i asked... i coulda figured out where the fuel filter is at. i use a fuel injector cleaner every 5th tank or so. i will be changing the oil this week and im prolly gonna put that lucas oil treatment in with which ever oil i decide to get(still not sure on that).

Lucas is good stuff. I used to use it in a trany that was going bad and I must say it gave me a couple thousand extra miles.
