partsguy
I've got what I thought was a blown head gasket/cracked or warped head on a 85 GL Wagon, auto trans and no turbo. It has blown coolant out the overflow of the rad and has water in the oil. As I removed the head this evening, I observed the shaft of the lower set of head bolts to be rusted and corroded. One of the bolts was so corroded I could barely pull it out. Do I have a crack in the block? What's causing the corrosion on the bolts? The car does have a lot of miles (150,000 +). I ran out of time to really do a good job of checking the head. Up to the point of removing the head bolts all parts seemed normal (at least from a guy that usually works on British cars). I'm open to all ideas!
Turbone
This is normal for a blown HG. If left like this for a while it will corrode several of the bolts. Just make sure you clean the up real good and run one in all the holes to clean them out. Use some neversieze on the bolts when you install the heads. partsguy
Yes, it does look like a blown HG. The head does seem to be warped. Does the block on these machines ever get warped and need to be machined?
WJM
Yes, it does look like a blown HG. The head does seem to be warped. Does the block on these machines ever get warped and need to be machined? As long as the heads are TRUE, and the HGs are OE (i would still use the OE turbo ones just ot be safe and give it some overkill), and you CLEAN those holes and bolts up so the head gets TQ'd down correctly, the block should be fine as long as it was not "toasted" IE: overheated severely. Ive cooked my current block BAD on the Dragon...lost ALL coolant after the turbo coolant line cracked...it was running not much good (wow, thats bad english there) as it was knocking so bad the ECU had the timing so far retarded it wouldnt go up a hill! After letting it cool and put water back in it...its fine and 10k miles later or so, still going and pushing 13 psi daily.\ So i think the blocks are fine and tough as nails...after all it IS closed deck.
