New to Subaru/ oil & engine ?s

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I've been driving my '93 Loyale for 5 mos now, and things are popping up. I need to put in a new ball joint on the right side, and I seem to be burning up some oil. The ball joint is no problem, but any ideas on the oil? Also, what's with the EA81/82 stuff? What does it mean, and how do I know which mine is? Thanks to anyone who can gently usher me into the jargon.

Welcome!!!

First the EA81/EA82 stuff refers to engine series. Your Loyale uses a version of the EA82.

What makes you believe a ball-joint needs replacing? Possible, but haven't heard to much feedback on ball-joint failures, especially in such a young Subaru. But I am fairly new to this board, so listen to others...

Subaru engines rarely burn oil like most other engines... they last nearly forever. (Engines with 150K+ have been opened up and still have original honing marks visible.) They leak badly from predictable places, and some have issues with losing oil through the PCV.

Feel free to ask questions. Just be prepared for SOMEONE to suggest you search first. (But I will never be that someone. )

Looks like someone already beat me to it! Well, lets start with the part I know for sure!

EA81/EA82 are the engine/chassis codes for subarus made from 1980-1989 (Some EA82s were made until 1994). The EA81 was from 80-84 (Some were made until 89) and the EA82 from 85-89/94.

The oil leak could be bad rings, leaky gaskets or any number of things, so I'll let someone else tackle that one!

Welcome to the board!

This is the place!

I was told I needed to replace the ball joints in my 82 to pass state inspection. Then I took it to another station and they said the joints were fine and passed inspection on the car. Never got dinged on that since?

My car blows a tiny little bit of smoke when I first start it or after it has been sitting a while. I haven't ever done anything about it. Until it's blowing smoke all the time or using a bunch of oil, I just gonna continue to drive it! :burnout:

Good luck with your EA82
