It would work. Those tacks have settings for 4,6,8 cylinder cars. You would have to mount it on the dash or something though.

green to coil -

 

black to ground

 

red to +12v

 

white to lighting circuit, optional

it'll work you can also find alternate mounting points for it like the A pillar or even the top of the dash

 

 

and it should have 3 spade connections in the back that are 4,6,and 8 cylinder and just place the wire onto the 4cyl spade

 

that is going by memory here cause it has been like 6 years since I had a VDO tach and sure wish I pulled it when I sold my bug cause it was like 2 inches dia

Not sure I understood...

right in front of the front tire on the fender on top of the bumper is a rectangular light and I was just wondering what it is

 

then again looking at yours and then my 83 wagon (it's in the sig) looks like a marker light but mine is in the bumper instead of above it
