well I suspect blown headgaskets on my RX since my waterpump is shot to h*** and back. It doesn't have any water in the oil, oil in the radiator, water in the combustion chambers, I can't really tell if there's water in the exhaust from a cracked head but it DOES have gen 2 heads on it. There is something though. There's a white residue from what appears to be dried antifreeze on th uppipe under the motor. Now on futher inspection, I noticed that there's a spot on the bottom of the head where the headgaskets is right in the center that has this same white residue on it. Its a spot about an inch long and it apears to be on both sides. Do these headgaskets blow out here? I thought it was kinda weird myself but I wasn't sure, thus me asking this question. I can get some pics of it if need be. This motor from the looks of it has never been overheated since the timing belt covers aren't melted at ALL and none of the bolts came stripping out when I removed the covers like ANdrew's turbowagon which has about 40k miles LESS then mine. Any thoughts?

Have you checked yet for the crack that forms in the exhaust port?

no I haven't but its on the bottom of the heads as well.....I'll check once I can get the uppipe off.

When my 86 GL-10 blew its headgasket it would pee a stream out the bottom of the headgasket onto the ground. Other cars I have had showed no signs other than coolant vanishing into thin air.

well I think besides putting a gas tank in it to get it to run, I'm also gonna put a waterpump on it and fill it up to see what is going on and to see if there is really anything wrong with it. Usually the timing belt covers melt a little when the motor overheats right? Mine show NO signs of melting whatsoever so I'm kinda septical on the headgaskets now...

You are correct, usually when you cook the engine the timing covers kinda melt.

 

More likely than not, the water pump is just totally cooked and that was leaking water everywhere and that led to the white residue all over the engine.

 

Try throwing on afew hoses and the water pump and see what happens...

My '87 didn't melt or distort its covers after a blown turbo coolant hose led to its blown HG.

well I'm planning on throwing a remand waterpump ($21.00) at it, put some water in it and see if it leaks from anywhere. As for the residue being all over the motor, its not, JUST on the up pipe and the small spot on the bottom of the heads where the headgaskets are. Like its not even on the heads, just the gaskets..

i know money is tight but don't spare expense on the water pump i would go new. cuz we all know that the cooling system on subarus is the weak spot. just my 2 cents worth

well its just until spring and I have more moola and then its going to get cam seals, timing belts, crank seals (front and rear), etc. etc. etc. Its just going to get me from work to home and to my girls house:)
