Time for a spark plug change on a 98 impreza 2.2 outback sport.

Should i put the same type of oem plug back in or.....

 

 

does anyone have a suggestion on a upgraded plug for better

performance or better gas mileage?

NGK V-power Copper. Alot of people on the board use them and reccomend them. Granted platinum is better but doesn't last as long as the coppers.

First off, after years of Sube experience many of us - back me up guys! - have come to the conclusion that NGK Spark plugs are the best for Subaru engines. "V- Power" or "V-groove" is one step from the bottom and work very well, and are not expensive.

 

If you feel like upgrading, NGK do make Iridium plugs that fit Sube engines, in fact some models (mainly Turbos) use these as factory fit.

 

Stay away from fancy multiple-ground plugs.

coppers typically should be checked/replaced at 30K

platinums at 60K and Iridiums at 120K.

 

I would concur with the NGK brand for Subaru's, copper or the platinums. Subaru mechanics I've spoken to mostly state to stay with NGK for best performance.

Yeah, copper's a better conductor than platinum, but platinum lasts a lot longer.

 

In my opinion, the extended service interval of platinum plugs is not really an advantage, since I think you should be removing your plugs more often than that just to check them and to make sure they don't fuse to the heads.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think platinium and iridium NGK plugs are copper cored and it's only the tip that's platinum or iridium. Moreover, the very small diameter of the plat or iridium tip makes for less voltage to get a spark. thus better cold starting is one of the advantages.

I agree! Stick with NGK.

Ok ok...someone told me otherwise on the board. I can only repeat what I was told.

A lot of Aussie guys I know use the NGK Iridium's on all model Subaru's right back to the old models and love 'em. One of my friends has 90,000kms (55,900 miles) on his and says they are as good as new when he had them tested.
