Removing an ign. assembly EA-81

Featured Replies

My ignition assm. is shot. The piece that sticks into the switch is broken off. Going to the junk yard in the mornng and need to know how to remove one. Also would it be easier to just remove the whole steering column to the tilt? It looks like it just has 1 bolt holding it in.

Ben,go for the whole column and take it home.Undo the joint under the hood.Unbolt from up under the dash by the computer. It'll drop down and then you just yank it forward.Sometimes it's a little hung up on the screw of a collar at the end of the column.Might apply a little grease to the grommet in the firewall.Don't bother trying to undo the collar or anything else. You don't need to dismantle the steering column covers either. Some folks will tell you you do but they're next years crop, still green.

You do need to take that stuff off to get at the ignition.Once there you'll find you may need a drill to take the rivet heads off of the bolts-or at least two of the bolts.the others will be Philips.

Good luck,call if needed.

you'll need a drill to get the ignition off, so get the column.

Removing just the lock is doable but you need to remove 4 10MM headed bolts to get the ignition switch off a column with tilt steering. The bolts are a PITA to get out but its doable. Take the covers off the column and slide what is refered to as an ignition wrench in and get the bottom two then the top two. The wrench is available at Sears as part of a set with a whole bunch of other little wrenches.

Depending on the cars setup the column coming out as one big unit can be a lot easier especially if you have somebody else around to help you as stuffing the column thru the firewall and getting it into the steering yoke is kindof hard alone.
