December 13, 200421 yr I have a 1994 Loyale 4WD automatic. All of a sudden the car stopped forward motion while in 2WD. There was a clunking sound. I put the vehicle in 4WD and the car did move although it took higher RPMs to move it. Also, the tranny was ab out 1 quart low of Dexron fluid but adding the proper fluid did not change anything. Any thoughts? Oh yes, about three years ago I had the tranny rebuilt. HELP!
December 13, 200421 yr Author Interesting. Had the CVs replaced a year plus ago. The folks doing the work did not fully tighten them and they finally made some noise. Had them tightened a month ago. Odd stuff. I don't doubt this is a possibility. Could it still be a tranny or transfer case?
December 14, 200421 yr I would think axle also. I assume that this is a 3-speed auto? Same problem if selector is in "1" instead of "D"? How about reverse?

December 14, 200421 yr Just becuase they were replaced doesn't mean they are fine now Did you check them axles? Have yiou jacked up the car now and looked for obviouse signs of malfunction?

December 17, 200421 yr If the axle nuts weren't torqued properly, it is entirely possible that one or both of the hubs got chewed up. This happened on a friend's car this fall. put the car in drive with the rear wheels chocked and preferable with an assistant to sit in the drivers seat and observe the front axle nuts to see if they are turning while the wheels sit still.
December 21, 200421 yr Author That was it. Thanks. The left front axle died as a result of improper torquing. It turns out that this torquing is a real issue on subys. Axle, boot, fluid for boot, some serious clean-up, and $196 later we are driving!
