The headers on my car were red hot last night after a quick rip around the coal hills just down from my house, I boosted above 12psi once, most of the driving was half throttle with shots of WOT here and there. On the way home was when i hit the high boost, I ran through the gears hard maybe 2 min from the coal hills to my house. Is this "normal" The only time i've really noticed a cherry red header was when I melted my DP after running waaaayyy lean going up the mountain:banghead:. I don't check the pipes all that often the ony reason i noticed it this go around was cause I wanted to look at the ps lines by the header.

Anyonce else see this?

Its normal. I did driving like that...and the only reason I didnt see the stock header glowing was due to the sheilding and insulation...but the turbo was BRIGHT cherry red.

 

I have not done any night running and got out to check with the TWE's, but on something thats pushing hard like that on turbo...its fairly normal.

Yes, very normal to have it glowing. Headers glowing on a N/A engine would mean real bad news but for the turbo, especially the stock turbo, red hot is fine. Just let that puppy idle a bit before killing the ignition. 12 psi is about the upper limit for a stock fuel system and will go lean much over that. I had awesome results over 19psi with a 5th injector for enrichment over 12 psi. Very easy to hook up and tune, gotta get an air/fuel meter though. My little scoob did 14.2 in the quarter with no internal engine mods.

One way to keep the under hood temps. down and increase power on a turbo equipped car is to ceramic coat the pipes and turbo. I read an article about this guy who did it on his Powerstroke diesel. he used this www.techlinecoatings.com.. The stuff is water based and just brushes on. He said after he was done, he could lay his hand on the exhaust with engine up to temp and running.
