Not sure about the Outback hood, I'm pretty sure any 5MT tranny will fit from 90 to 97 at least. AWD is in the tranny, not the engine, so be sure you get an AWD tranny is all. Check in the Offroad Forum (on this same site) for lift kits for this car. I'd suspect there are more people there that know about that than here. coloradosubarules
You can go with a 5MT or 4EAT (auto) tranny. They did make AWD and FWD (front wheel drive only) trannys. No you can not turn a 2WD into a 4WD. I mean you could...if you can weld. Welcome to the wonderful world of Roo's. Enjoy your stay. If you treat your car right then you will be around for a long time.
JT95
Yes, the hood will work. I had to buy a new hood for my 95 and I wish i had gone the Outback route. If I were you, I'd check with aftermarket body parts suppliers. Factory replacement and salvage yard will be more than you want to pay. I bought a Taiwan hood that fits well and, hey, I figure foreign sheetmetal is foreign sheetmetal.
