xt6 alt.swap

Featured Replies

I need a new alt. on my 83 and after reading about the xt6 swap in the repair manual it sound like a good idea. (im planning on putting in a extra deep cycle battery to run lights sterio ects..) Is thier in difference in the xt6 alts through out the years, is one year better/cheeper then others.

Thanks

David

all XT6's alternators are identical. if you've ever taken an alternator apart, there's solder joint inside of it that causes the demise of most XT6 alternators. resolder and drive on. i've got a rebuilt one so i've never done it though, but know someone who has.

What are the people, who have done this swap, using as the spacer for this swap? Is it something that has to be specialy made, or what. Thanks.

well I recently installed a xt turbo alt. looks like the xt6 unit just lower amps.

all i used was a small piece of flat bar with two holes drilled in it. used the stock alt bolt at the factory bracket with a nut on the back side. used a slightly longer bolt thru the bar into the alt. worked well.

only one tip. when drilling the holes in the flat bar make them a little wider apart than you think they need to be and it will still work. to close together and your S.O.L.
