January 23, 200521 yr Hi everyone I am having starter problems lately, sometimes I hear a click and have to try many time before the car will start. The most recent is that the car will start, but the starter will not disengage, making the grinding metal sound. Will the bad solenoid contacts make starter to not disengage? Do I need a new starter? If I do, will the starter from 96 outback 2.5 fit my 95 2.2? Thanks for the help! 95 legacy wagon AWD
January 23, 200521 yr It does sound like you are going to need a new starter. You may also need a new ignition switch if that is causing the starter to stay turned on while the engine is running. Hopefully the bendix is sticking on the starter and a new one will fix that problem also. I'm not sure if your '96 starter will work in the '95.
