well this weekend im getting my new soobs towed to the house, im picking up the things im already planning on replaceing. the head, intake, and oil pan gaskets, figured since ill have the motor apart that much i would see what else you guys think i should go ahead and replace. the timing chain was only replaced about 40k ago so that should be fine. im not looking to do any hi pro stuff on this motor since im planning on doing a build up of the bad motor im pulling outta the 85 after i get the now better motor situated in the car and get it driveable. so any suggestions on some basic stuff to do while i have it apart that much. not looking ot do a complete project on the motor right now since i want to have it going by next weekend.

You know I would go ahead and replace the timing belts since the service interval is 50k, also you should replace the cam seals, the oil pump seal and o-ring, a new water pump wouldn't hurt either.

damn i went to get the parts i planned on today and couldnt believe the head gaskets were 30 apiece at autozone, damn my 4cyl breeze is only 35 for the headgasket, got the parts i mentioned im gonna chack out the other stuff mentioned and see if any of it looks like it should be replaced

I think others will agree with me (WJM?) when I say that you should use OEM headgaskets. NAPA and others are often problematic.

 

Definitely replace the T-belts. The service interval is only 20k away. This is another item that you should use OEM for. Also check the tensioners for any play or roughness. They should have been replaced with the belts last time, but that probably didn't happen.

 

Reseal or replace the oil pump. Do front and rear main seals, cam seals, and all other gaskets. Definitely use OEM for the intake manifold gaskets. Make sure you use anaerobic sealer on the head-to-cam-tower mating surface and be really careful with the O-rings for the oil passages. Do not use RTV here. (I know I spout off on this every two weeks, but that's because I think it's really important.) Put some aviaton form-a-gasket on the oil pan gasket.

 

If you've got the time, disassemble the hydro lifters and clean them. Reassemble them submerged in ATF.

 

There is an oil pressure relief valve in each cam tower. Disassemble this and clean it out. If the spring looks/feels old and worn out, replace it. This can cause low oil pressure in the top end, leading to HVLA tick and other bad stuff.

 

Check the heads for cracking too. They are a poor design and are prone to cracking problems. However, bridge cracks (which are really common) between the valves are not a problem unless they extend into the ports. I have the TSB describing this.

well i would love to use oem parts the only prob it the nearest dealer to me is liek 60 miles + away from me so its kinda a pita to make it there

WAAAAY cheaper than dealers. Actually, their OEM stuff is usually cheaper than I can get NAPA, even with my massive student discount at NAPA. Great service too. Call them rather than ordering online though.

well at least 1 bit of good news i found out the timing belts and tensioners we replaced maybe 5k before the parts car got in the accident, ill check them out while i have the heads off to do the gaskets but i most likely wont have to bother replaceing them. still waiting to get them was supposed to tow them over here this weekend but the weather was lousy and they couldnt get to the good body car since they would have had to go to mud to get it. they are gonna try to get them here today after they get outta work. after i get the cars here ill get some pics of them and post them up
