I got a hold of a lady not too far away wanting to sell her 79 GL 4wd for $350. She said it runs but not well... I have a EA82 MPFI and she's my baby. So the question is, what would I have to do to make the swap: EA71 out, EA82 in?

 

Also, has anyone tried to offroad an 79 Gl, was it worth it or should I look for a 81-84 instead?

$350, now thats a good Subaru price I'd go look at it for sure. If you do swap motors lemme know; I'd like them EA71 pistons

The EA71 cars are great vehicles, but there are two issues relating to offroading that must be overcome. They have a single range tranny from the factory. That's got to go if you're doing any sort of offroad stuff. Wouldn't be hard if you're doing an engine swap too. Secondly, if you want to lift if you have to fabricate it or send it to Mudrat. No lift kits for that car.

 

EA82 into EA71 has been done a few times now. Garner has an EA82T in his that seems to have worked out fabulously.

IIRC, you may have to clearance out the frame rails
