2WD auto tranny doesn't work properly in AWD car...

Featured Replies

further to topic http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29820 my friends mechanic installed my 1991 2WD auto tranny into his 1991 AWD Auto Legacy.

The transmission only works in first gear and reverse.

Has anyone done this transplant? What is the secret? Does the 2WD TCU need to be installed into the AWD car also? Any other electrical or mechanical modifications needed?

You are probably going to need a FWD TCU.

ok, so the TCU was changed to a FWD TCU in the AWD car.

Transmission still only works in low gear and reverse. Any other suggestions?

So you pretty much just dropped the old AWD tranny out, stuck the FWD one in, and plugged the harnnesses up.....correct?

I know this may sound like a silly question, but did the FWD transmission work fine when it was in your car?

unless they, Subaru, changed the wiring pinouts on the tcu to the ecu, shouldnt the tranny and tcu bolt and plug in and ride off into the sunset? Or am i up s**t creek on this one?

The FWD and AWD transaxle, at least on the XT6, have different harnesses. EG, the VSS is internal on one type and external on the other type. If you used the stock harness unmodified than this at least is wrong. May want to compare the pinouts at the transmission connection. More than likely all those gears not working is because current is not reaching the appropriate solenoids.
