So there's an LSD at the local junkyard (Thanks NVBigBlue) and I went to go nab it oof the car today. Well everything went alright except I can't get the rear axles to slide out of the A-arm. The axles are frozen with dirt/rust to the differential and WERE frozen to the A-arm except I whacked the crap out of it with a big piece of exhaust. I got the axles loose from the a-arm, but I don't have enough room to have them slide through. I need like about 4 inches more. What can I do? I've already unbolted the diff from the frame, so should I try to jack it back up to its normal position, or leave it down low on the ground? Thanks for the help.

could you cut one of the CV boots and then pull the retaining clip inside of the CV joint, then slide the end of the axle out?

Yeah, take a sledge to one of the axle boots and try to break it free. If that doesnt work, then not sure what to say, you can unbolt the entire rear control arm, but right now i cant picture a EA82 rear suspension in my head

there is room to drop the diff and wiggle one end free, then the other.

 

the rear diff stubs come out fairly easily i think. do they just pop out like the front differential stubs? if so, you may be able to pop them free with a pry bar and just use your stub from the diff you currently have. i've never had to do it on the rear stubs but datsun guys do it all the time and i know they aren't too bad to remove on the front diff. just yank the snot out of the axle and it will pull the stub out. anyone know if the rear is the same? a pry bar between axle and diff would pop it right out if so.

I could try thet. I was just so mad by the end of the day that I kinda just gave up. I'll try going back tomorrow and getting it.

the outer end of the axle fits on a splined spindle with a roll pin. you dont have to pop the spindle out like a font axle.

 

if you can get the diff out of the car, whack the insode of the DOJ away from the diff with a 3 lb hammer. rotate and whack, repeat. find a hammer that is beveled on one side so you dont hit the diff as you swing.

 

a propane toch and PB blaster works quite well

Thanks guys I got it. I ended up just removing the whole A-arm on the passenger side, and slipping the axle out of that then pounding the other axle out. I got one of the axles off, but the other is stuck in for a while. The biggest surprise I got though was that Pick and Pull doesn't charge seperately for the diff AND the axles, they're sold together like a truck solid axle. So I didn'e need to cut and whack and brak the axles, I coulda kept them.

The person behind the counter was probably stupid. Usually they'll charge for everything attatched. Once i went with a friend to get a rear hatch for his wagon. They charged him for the hatch, the glass, the plastic interior pieces.... it was horrible.
