Replace 2.5 w/ 2.2?

Featured Replies

hello. Was wondering what sort of effort replacing a 2.5L in and outback w/a 2.2 would be...

Will it mate w/ the tranny allright? Would I need to swap the entire harness?

Looking at a 96 outback. EJ22 would be from a 91-93 legacy.

Thanks

The early 96 Outbacks had the EJ22 in them, the EJ25 wasn't standard in the Outback until 97.

As for the swap, without having checked the ECU pinout, I'd say it would be fairly simple. Unless you already have the donor car, I would suggest trying to find a 95 to 99 Legacy with an EJ22 in it, the wiring should be the same then.

I'll loan you my garage and help if you decide to take it on.

I happen to have a spare parts car (95 Legacy L AWD Wagon) that you can look at to see if it will work.

Actually EJ25 was standard in the Auto outbacks in 96.

5spd Outbacks got the 2.2

Auto outbacks got the 2.5
