Hi folks. First posting on the board. It has been a big help to me.

I have a 97 Outback, speedo and cruise are out and CEL is on, ordered a VSS from 1rstsubaru, it should arrive tomorrow. Got under there today with a 17 mm to see how tight it might be, and, well, it is seriously on there. Wondering if there is a trick to this seemingly easy swap, or do I just muscle it off. Don't want to strip it.

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Also, if it really IS the VSS, then I'll have a speedo cluster from a 97 auto for sale with 87K on it that I bought from a salvage yard before I read here that if the cruise is out too, then it's the VSS. $50 plus shipping.

Hollander is showing an interchange from 97 to 99 but they are broken out by Outback, GT and L. Must be the different size wheel/tire. Perhaps you can just use the tach and use your own speedo?

Thanks, I didn't know they're separate, I'm such a newbie. The local pick-n-pull has a burned-interior Outback, not much use.

Bump. any advice or tips about removing the speed sensor would be appreciated.

As an aside, 1rtsubaru ships ata snails pace. Could walk it here in a frickin week.
