Which engine do you have?
i have the ea82 carburated engine in an 85' GL wagon

Its easy to pull the engine to make gasket replacement easier. If your just doing the oil pan and valve covers, they can be accomplished with a 10mm socket and a 12mm wrench. If you want to do your intake gaskets and oil pump, it will take alittle more. You dont need anything special, a basic set of metric tools should complete the job.

If you plan on removing the engine, you'll need a hoist of course, but a carburated motor wont have much in the way.

do i need to remove the engine to replace my timing cover gaskets? because since the oil pump is there on the front of them and its crammed in there is it necessary or not?
