  1. how about try delivering a pizza in this thing to the rich people gated community...
  2. although they are very well capable of doing over 60, since its such a small and low HP engine and small auto tranny high rpms sound just about right
  3. think of the 4 speed auto full time 4WD as the first of the permanent symmetrical AWD that Subaru came out with...kinda like the one that started it all
  4. is that solenoid a thing that can be separated and replaced on its own or is it something that is a one piece with the carb?
  5. I have been having the timing lurking in the back of my mind but is it possible for it jump out of time just randomly? hmmm if so it looks like I need to borrow or buy a timing gun...
  6. carb cleaner I believe I have some in the back of the GL. and thank you. yes my dad was the one that taught me the basics of car work so its thanks to him that I know what I know now. I wish I could collect Subarus like that but unfortunately where we live we are limited to enough cars per driver. if not i'd prolly be hoarding a couple of EA82 Subies, a Brat or two, and a couple of classic Audi models I will definitely keep posted with this. I swear i feel like im running a shop here lol. my Audi needs new fan clutch and coolant expansion tank, my mom's Honda Odyssey needs new brakes and rotors, my sister's VW Jetta Turbo needs an oil change and my GL needs diagnostics lol. my dad taught me well. he definitely would be proud
  7. is there a specific vacuum hose/hoses that I need to check? also what did you spray? soapy water? plain water?
  8. yes its carbed. the no idle issue came on suddenly. the car has been in the family since 2003 and the carburetor has NEVER been touched or given problems my dad would call the carburetor area sacred ground lol no one was to touch it unless legitly broken. while its running on throttle there is no smoke from the exhaust. I was thinking possibly loss of compression but would that be sudden or gradual? the car never changed altitude still at sea level give maybe 23 feet above I still live at home with family anyway so the car has been at home. Hmm maybe suby is mad at me for stepping up to the Audi?
  9. oops sorry forgot that part. its a carbureted EA82 where is that idle air controller located? Thank You...
  10. hey USMB its been quite a while since I have posted anything here hope everyone is doing good. so here is my situation, about 3 years ago I had the chance of stepping up into a 2001 Audi A6 Quattro wagon so since I didn't want to sell or get rid of my trusty 85 GL wagon my dad took over it so that it could stay at home and in the family. along the way my dad had plans on restoring the car (kinda like a weekend project) Sadly though he fell ill suddenly and passed away on August 18, 2014 . after discussing things with my mom, my sister and I have decided to start what my dad never did. currently the car is sitting in the garage dusty because with everything that has been happening I haven't had a chance to really poke around it. for starters I am aware of an issue with it not wanting to idle. it will run (albeit rough) with my foot on the throttle but once I get my foot off the pedal it dies almost immediately. I know my dad replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter earlier this year and he bought a new pcv valve but never put it in. what else can I check? after learning how to wrench on an Audi I thought that this would be a piece of cake but this no idle issue has me stumped (how the saying goes you wrench on an Audi and you can wrench on anything). I need help because I really want to get this Suby running again cuz I know that that was my dad's dream and I want to do this little project in his memory. thanks 1985 Subaru GL D/R 4WD Wagon 5speed manual 249,000 miles
  11. yes agreed. it takes a special kind of person to work on these beautiful Subarus. Someone with patience and a willingness to learn and memorize every curse word in the alphabet . I myself have learned a lot with my 85 GL wagon from wrenching to cursing lol. Here at my place we got a set of curse words for each of my cars (The Subaru and the Audi) lol
  12. Sorry to revive a somewhat old thread but that sexy GL-10 and Audi A4 caught my attention. Welcome to the best car combo you can have. I myself have an 85 GL wagon with dual range 4WD and a 2001 Audi A6 all wheel drive wagon and they are unstoppable together. Cheers to 4x4 wagons
  13. ea82 goodness that engine is the most reliable lil machine I have ever seen!! My 85 GL wagon has been in the family for 10 years now and has been the most reliable car EVER! I'd be a huge liar if I said the ea82 was junk. Sure it's underpowered for today's standards but I doubt that any new car today with 200+ hp is going to last as long as our trusty lil ea82s.
  14. Yupp I had an 86 GL-10 turbo front trac wagon and it was bone stock and pretty reliable. I felt that it had more than enough power under boost to keep up with traffic and stuff. I was sad the day I had to part with it cuz of the strict smog laws here in California plus we where moving and didn't have room to store it and didn't want to leave it in the field in the back of the house.
  15. Hey everyone it's been quite a while since I been here. So for the first time in quite a while I'm actually having issues with my trusty lil GL wagon. At idle its fine but only for a few mins then it dies out. but when I take it under load (say shifting 3rd to 4th) it just dies like as if its ran put of gas. It will drive just fine in 1st to 2nd gear but shifting past that and issues start to come up. Today when I got home from work I found my dad taking out the PCV valve to check it and it checked out fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Car info: 85 GL wagon with D/R 4WD carb'd EA82 255,xxx mi Thanks!!
  16. they work only when i pull the switch back toward me....
  17. true but remember there are two filaments in these bulbs one for the low beam and one for the highbeams. im definitely gon look into the relays cuz it does make sense to check those bad boys too thats a good start cuz only the highbeam flashers work. maybe i have a bad low beam connector? what are the chances of it being the main headlight switch on the dashboard? (85 GL wagon ea82)
  18. hey wats up everyone i havent been on in over a year hope everyone is doing awesome out in the subaru world. so my trusty GL wagon has been having some issues with its headlights. when i flip the switch to lowbeams the headlights dont turn on only the parking lights and rear tail lights work BUT interestingly enough the highbeam flashers do whenever i pull the lever toward me. i need some clues as to where to look into because live out in the countryside and its pretty dark out at night and sometimes someone at home needs to use it to go somewhere at night and we cant. thanks so much
  19. yummy fried alternator. lol JK . check out my thread. fried alternator wit smoked radio. exact thing happen to me two dayz before new years
  20. hmm now even more reason to keep my GL in the garage wen i'm home. hopefully u find it. i know it prolly wont go so far but since I-5 runs thru Stockton too i'll keep my eyes peeled cuz u never know. good luck boss
  21. check the stove pipe that goes from the air intake down to the exhaust below. i had a similar problem and after i put in a new pipe it solved the problem. check that out too...
  22. hey i dont see any thing wrong with it. so go ahead and have some fun
  23. hey Happy New Year . i already decided that i'm not gon tinker around with this old alternator anymore. i'm gon get a new alt and new battery cuz this battery is 4 years old and the alternator only God knows how old it is. that came with the car and we got it in 2003...
  24. forgot to ask. is it true that the alternator test at auto zone and other places they do it is not 100% accurate? cuz i took the alternator in to test and it passed. BUT i heard that sometimes it can be mis read due to bumps it takes on the way there. true or false?
