ea82 head advice needed

Featured Replies

I'm rebuilding the motor from my '87 dl carb wagon. The motor is out of the car, heads are off and I have 2 freshly rebuilt spfi heads along with the one good and one not so good original carb heads. (Got both of the spfi heads through ebay for $200 total with no core exchange.)

The hitachi carb set-up for this car is a complicated mess of hoses and pipes (all labeled before removal), so the question now is: Do I put the spfi heads on the car without drilling out the exhaust gas recycling port and simplifing the mess of hoses and piping or do I make the spfi heads into carb heads and keep it stock?

This is in the Portland metro area and I will have to take the car through DEQ. (A recent news article in one of the papers here told the story of a person who took his car to various DEQ testing stations and got wildly varying emissions results from easy pass to fail, so this will be hit or miss in any case.)

Thanks,

Tom

SPFI Conversion

or you could put the motor together without the AIS system. That is the only thing that is missing from a SPFI head. then you could rig the AIS system sit where its supposed to with the hoses going to the air box and the AIS silencer and metal pipes. If you dont have to pass an under the hood inspection leave it off. It probably wont make that much of a difference

What kind of IM testing do they do there? If it's visual, I'd leave the AIS bolted on but not functional. If they do tailpipe testing, removing the AIS would probably affect the readings.

I would seriously consider the SPFI conversion at this point if your state would allow that. It will simplify the underhood mess a great deal and improve power, drivability, and economy. This is also the best time to do the conversion.
