1988 XT6 that won't shift right.

I have an '88 Subaru XT6 with a 4EAT transmission that works seems to only work in 2nd, 3rd, and reverse. The hold button does not light up and when I put the selector on 2nd the light on the dash for 2nd does not light up. I tested the HOLD switch and it is good. I also unplugged the TCU that is behind the driver's side trim piece and there was absolutely no difference in shifting. The POWER light does not ever come up on the dash either.

 

 

I am guessing that the TCU is bad but I am not sure. One day the transmission just started acting up like this without any other hint of trouble.

probally you're tranny is going out. maybe you should consider a new one but the problem is that if its an auto it cost a lot of $$$$$$$$$ :eek:. now thats scary to know.

how does the fluid in it look? auto's are very picky as to both the quality and quantity of fluid in them.

 

I'd try some new fluid before you get too worried about it.

The 4EAT's can be pretty finicky. It could be that the fluid and filter need to be changed. I would also check the connections to the tranny, theres a couple on top of it.

Also make sure the tires are theexact same size . If not, it will throw the whole tranny whacky. I do have experience with that one :rolleyes: If you havent yet, go over to XT6.net, theres a plethora of knowledge there. Theres alot of well intentioned folks here, some know more than others. It helps to have personal knowledge of the part(s) and car(s) when giving advice tho.
