advice and trouble shooting

Featured Replies

I just bought a 92 loyale and will be travelling to New York to get it in two weeks. Here's the issue. The seller told me that the car will run for ten minutes or so and then just shut itself off.

It only has 87,000 miles on it and shifts fine according to him

Where should I start looking so that I can get this car running? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know if the car will re start once it has shut off? Or do you have to wait a while?

Without more info, I would guess either coil or the ignitor module (inside the distributor) may have crapped out.. I have had both happen on my 87 and they produced similar symptoms to what you describe.

I have heard people mention the MAF sensor as the cause of similar problems - check codes on the ECU

coil is also a possibility

does it become excessively rich/lean when it dies?

Shouldn't be too hard to get working right

You are kidding me, I just wrote a post about buying a car in New York last night. I don't know your plan and I dont want to assume anything. But let me say this. Have the car shipped to your state. I highly encourage you painful as it to read my diatribe on this very subject in a Post called Legacy Prices Across the USA, any opinions. Or do a search for New York DMV. You may have bought a car in new York before, in which case please disregard my concern. I am just a sucker who made the mistake of going to get a car that I had bought in New York. My friend was nearly arrested and the Sub nearly impounded. Fortunatly the fail safe " I am from Wyoming" excuse saved him. But anyways please read that other post or PM if you want more info about Vehicle Retrieval for Non- New York residents.

Thanks Oh and as far as the troubleshooting goes. You may want to bring a Fuel Filter- Not sure if the car is dying as it idles or if it would die while a person was romping on the Throttle? But either way maybe Fuel pressure is an issue.

Bring an alternator if you can. Perhaps it is acting flaky and the car losses power after something overheats.( Doubtful) Maybe the lead on the back of the alternator is getting brittle and get hot enough to cut out.

The only other thing I can think of ( not sure if applicable in this situation) But isnt there a Device that makes the Car idle at higher RPM for the first ten minutes or so and then kicks it down to 1000 or 700. Maybe it does idle high and then when it is kicked down by this Device ( the name of which does not come to mind - Some sort of Sensor Likely) , the idle is set to low and it just dies. Also is this a Turbo by any chance? I will check this post later. My advice may not be helpful, but thats all I can think of right now. Thanks, Gabe

A little more info.

The car dies after about ten miles and then it will restart after cooling off.

I really don't know much about the car other than the stock info and the fact that it dies when it warms up. He said that it never overheats tho.

A little more info.

maybe you can get the seller to pull the codes for you. It only take about ten minutes. I tried to get my seller in new York to do it but he just didnt have the time.

There is a TINY hole on the throttle plate to allow air through after the car has warmed up, and the warm-up solenid thingy I can't remember the name of closes - if that is clogged, that may be your problem - cleaning the throttle body should fix it.

A little more info.

Sounds like an ignition module or possibly ignition coil.
