Here's the dilema... i needs struts for my 96 legacy. i want to get outback struts for it for the extra height.

Does anybody know if i need to get new springs too????

i say i need to know this now because it technically failed inspection (PA).

Springs are what the weight of the car sits on, struts control how fast the suspension extends and retracts. To raise the car you'll need longer springs, and your struts (shocks) will need to be longer to accomodate the longer springs. On some vehicles spring packers or spacers can be used for a lift, not the best way, and I don't know if anything like that would work on your Legacy.

right, my question is that is i buy outback struts are the springs different than the non-outback (specifically)

As far as I know, Outback struts and springs are the same length. The reason they sit higher is that the strut bolts to the hub about 1.5" higher and the tires are bigger.
