Hey, My name is Niall and Im from Ireland and Ive just found out that the Timing belt is gone on my Impreza 1.8 Gl 1994-1999 model. Can anyone tell me if this is going to result in engine damage?

Hey Niall, someone might have an answer here, but you would be better of posting in the new generation forum.Dave.

No, your 1.8 is a non-interferance engine. (at least my searching here says it is). That means the valves/pistons never overlap.

All you have to do is replace the timing belt and you'll be good to go.

Niall,

Failte romhat go dti an bord.

In answer to your question,Subaru did not start building engines that bend valves until sometime around 1997.You only need replace the belts.Check why it broke, tensioners etc. On the earlier 1800 engines, once you set the first belt to the mark on the plastic housing , you had to turn the engine a full turn ,before you set the second belt to its mark .I dont know if yours is the same, but its definitely something to watch for as the manuals are not very clear on this. Its an easy fix.

Do they still pull a good pint in Madigans?

Slan go foill.

Jude
