well guys thanks for all the help so far, ive got the buggy almost running buuuuut not quite. heres what it does, when you turn it over she will just cough and pop. its gettin spark and fuel. one thing i am thinking is that its in a constant fuel cut situation because i didnt use any of the electronics attached to the wastegate. any other ideas? oh and its an ea82t engine and the ecu isnt throwing any codes at me

could be one of 2 things

bad ignition timing

bad cam timing

id make sure the distrubitor is not 180 out (exhaust stroke) and make sure the timing belt is right

thats what i was thinking too, the motor came out of a well running car and i didnt touch the disty, so shouldnt the timing still correct?. it must be getting fuel and spark to be coughing and popping so it makes sense that its just not doing it at the right time. does anyone know if the injectors are numbered the same as the cylinders, i suppose its possible i wired them in the wrong order

yep first thing i checked. everything looks a-ok. would having the wastegate electronics disconnected cause a no start situation? if not i must have the injectors mixed up.

If the stock wastegate controlle rwas not hooked up, the ECU would be throwing a code 44 ( I think).

Currently, I have my wastegate gontroller wired in, but none of the vacuum hoses are connected, so its effectively bypassed. I am out of state at the moment, but when I get back home, i will unplug it completely and see if the car's behavior changes at all.

thanks caleb, i took a look last night and pulled a code 44. hopefully thats my problem! now to figure out how to hook it up, lol. its only a 2 wire connecter so one must either be power or ground and the other must go to the ecu. FSM here I come!!!!!!!!

allright well i'll try that. it does really seem like a timing issue. its getting fuel and spark. it coughs and pops like the timing is out of whack but the wierd thing is i never touched anything to do with the timing when i put the engine in and it came out of a well running car. i will quadruple check the plug wires right now and hook up the wastegate solinoid

  • Author

well i hooked up the wastegate solinoid with no results other than the error code going away. checked the plug wires they all look right. so once again im confused, lol. any thoughts?

You are going to have to check the timing by placing the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke and putting it at TDC. Then check the rotor and plug wire positions on the cap. The rotor turns counter clockwise I believe.

allright will do, time to get out the sawsall, my disty is located under the rear deck of my bug

ok well that took awhile but it looks good, so im at a loss here. i think im going to pull the motor again and directly wire only the systems it needs to start. now i need a bit of a list on things to skip.

purge control

egr sensor

hmmm thats all i can think of at the moment. if you have any other ideas on why this thing wont start let me know or this motor is outta there, lol. thanks guys

If the distributor wiring is ok then you might try marking the position of the disty and then rotate it while cranking the engine to see if you can make anything happen. If that doesn't work then I would have to say either the injectors are placed wrong or the cam timing is not right. I don't think there are any other options.

ya its very wierd. the injectors are wired correctly assuming they are numbered the same as the cylinders. i will try rotating the disty alltough it should already be correct as should the cam timing since it came out of a well running car. it shouldnt be anything electrical because theres spark and fuel. ahhh tiem for a break thanks again!
