1980 GL Automatic tranny

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever rebuilt the A/T in a 1980 wagon? Acquired this great deal (free) 1980 GL wagon with a automatic transmission. Only problem is it only works in L & 2. Put her into drive and it moves till it shifts up to drive and then nothing. Slips badly! Checked the fluid level and it's OK. Might need new bands. Any help or suggestions out there? Really to nice a car to crunch because of the tranny problem...Thanks...

I am fairly sure there is an adjustement for the band on the outside of the housing. try adjusting this and see if you recover third/final gear.

Goodluck,

Yes. try to adjust it. In a Haynes manaul, it tells you how. I got a car because that same reason.

If I remember right, it's on the driver's side of the tranny. right above the oil pan. You need to loosen the big nut and turn the small nut clockwise, just a little bit...not too tight, because it could wear the band out too much. I did mine a little at a time...

here this may help
