why did subaru wait so long to import the wrx

Featured Replies

to the usa? and even longer for the sti? obviously they sell well. i can see why mitsu didnt import the evo, it really didnt meet regulations and the company really didnt have mutch money.

i think it was something to do with the emission controls in the US were much stricker on the cars then in other places.. such as down under and europe...???

I'm pretty sure part of it was emissions, part of it was sales (of course) and then part of it is japan is full of meanies, they keep all the good cars/engines for themselves.

Well, I don't believe it had anything to do with emissions. I have a 96 JDM WRX engine in my 96 Impreza. It is just as it came from Japan, and it is one of the best cars that I have ever run through emissions, it passed with plenty of room to spare. I simply think it was an example of not knowing the market. Subaru had turbo cars in the USA before the WRX, the last one being the Legacy Turbo (91 to 94), but apparently the sells were not convincing enough for them to bring the WRX to the USA. It took 8 years of begging to get them to finally bring a car that would have sold well in the first place.
