Can I drive w/o a rear stabilizer?

Featured Replies

Would there be any danger or damage potential to driving with out the rear stabilizer bar on. The wrecking yard sent me the front rear control arm and I'm thinking of using it with the stabilizer bar removed.

why would you jeopardize your safety!!!

It's there for anti-roll. I'm a mechanic and would never run a vehicle without one!

Since a rear sway bar was just an option on the Gen1 Legacys and your 98 has a similar weight, center of gravity and suspension geometry; your going to be fine for the most part. Just remember that it won't corner as well and will lean more in high-speed maneuvers. Since you are looking for a new one, get one from an outback, they got an 18mm rear swaybar and it's a direct bolt in.

Yeah, totally. My car tries to flip over all the time.

The exclamation marks mean you're joking, right?

The most likely result is more understeer and more roll in corners.

My Impreza doesn't have one, and it's not an essential component. However, a car that has one fitted from stock, will also have it's springs balanced to accomodate it. Removing it will produce understeer for sure, and maybe some odd behaviour, but it's not gonna throw you off the road without warning.

Well, in the older wagons, the turbo wagon had one while the non-turbo version did not..

big difference in handling.
