Ok about a week ago I replaced the cv axels in my sisters 81 GL 2wd 5speed and everything was going all good, but yesterday when I was going to the store it started grinding again. First I thought I stripped a front hub, because it sounded like the axel was spinning on the splines. So I got a ride home to pull a hub off my suby just so I could get the car home. Well I got the hub on the car and when I wanted to drive, I had a friend watch the cv axel just in case it did it again. When I was pulling out of the drive way, it did it again but my friend said it wasn't the hub that was making the noise, but it was coming from under the hood. Now I'm wondering if I have to replace a tranny or something:banghead:

I have the same problem,.. isn't it frustrating

 

I bought new axles and within a few weeks the were worse than the originals

 

Were your axles brand new or reconditioned?

 

Mine were supposedly new but apparently the guy repaints old ones and sells them

If the car loses drive motion while this is going on, then I would guess there is a problem with that gear in the transmission.
