Most of the time they are damaged as well. Get used ones that are good.

The harmonic balancer and key are usually ruined before the crank's keyway is damaged.

Thanks guys. One other question: does the harmonic balancer part ever wear out? I know that on some GM cars, there is a rubber part in the harmonic balancer that starts to degrade/crack and wear out. I don't know if this is true for subaru.

Solid metal no rubber or plastic

On my 2.2, the pulley is two-piece, with a rubber layer in between. The holes for factory crankshaft holder tool are in the inner piece.

I think it depends what year of 2.2L, Mine is a 1991.

That thin rubber layer is hard to see, because of the shape of the pulley, the dirt, and limited view. But a '91 and a '95 may well be different.

The 95 uses different parts that the 91.

One more question, can the tensioner and idler pulleys be reused if the crank pulley came loose?

Subaruparts shows same part number, 12305AA242, for both years.

avk, I guess that means that the rubber part can wear out? My car has 15 years and 187K miles!

I don't know enough first-hand to tell how much risk there is. I remember looking at someone's Vanagon conversion site (can't find anymore) showing a salvaged EJ22 they bought with a broken pulley, and timing cover too as a result. As long as you have it off and verify it's a two-piece, might be a good idea to replace it.
