brakes come on

Featured Replies

someone gave my daughter a 90 legacy 2.2, lp4??. when i drove it the brakes seemed to come on when i turned the wheel hard in either direction forward or reverse, would release when i shut off engine. there is a button on the dash that says height that was blinking and seems to have something to do with it. when i switched to manual on shift lever it helped for a few moments then went back to braking again, have no owners manual and know nothing about this car. any ideas, thanks curt

Is it a smooth application of braking or is there a pulsing/jerkiness to the way it feels? Do you feel it in the steering wheel (left/right), in the brake pedal or in the 'seat of your pants'? manual or auto tranny?

This is the daughter... I'm sure my dad will check this when he gets home and update it if he needs to. What happens is you turn the wheel (left or right, whether you are going forward or in reverse) and the car comes to a stop. It happens fairly quickly, there isn't much of a pulsing to it. The car starts to shake around 60, but I'm pretty sure that's just an allignment. It is an automatic. It seems to be somehow tied to the "height" button and the air ride suspension.

An example. You are going forward, turn the wheel to the left and the car comes to a stop within a few seconds. It feels as though the braking system is "locked up". If you turn the key off completely, everything releases and the car moves forward about a foot or so.

Thanks for any help!!

If the car moves forward after the engine is switched off, you are experiencing some serious transmission "wind-up". The auto box is not working right anymore. Search the board for "Duty solenoid" to read more on this..

You're probably experiencing torque bind.

There is a fuse holder in the engine compartment on the passenger side near the strut tower. Put a spare fuse in there, and then drive the car. See if the problem goes away.

If it does, I'd suggest changing/flushing the transmission fluid as a start. That may help some, it may not. Also, some have added LSD additive to the ATF fluid.

If putting the fuse in doesn't help, the duty c solenoid could be stuck open, or there could be other problems.

Regarding the height control. Here are instructions to diagnosis it.

The blinking height light is more then likely a separate issue.
