a/t question / flush

Featured Replies

it is a a/t turbo full time 4wd wagon, 106,000mi , shifts good, my question is should i service the tranny and change out the fluid ? or just not do it ? because i was told it could harm it than help it ,thanks

I read a post like that recently, too. Personally, I can't see the logic in it. The big killer of ATs is degraded fluid, so I can't think of any real-world downside of giving it fresh, clean fluid.

I've had a few mechanics tell me that it was un-wise to change tranny fluid in an Auto tranny, but they wouldn'y give details.

Done hundreds of fluid/filter changes on various vehicles, never had problems from doing that, so can't see why they say that.

The worst things you can do to an Auto is let them sit for years without being moved, or flop one around on the ground/garage floor during a swap. I've had one go south on me from rough handling during a swap.

Nothing wrong with fresh fluid and new filter.......

the quick lube place said they would not do it :-\, since it was a subaru

What did they say that they would not do? A "power flush"? They may not do a specific procedure due to the design of the way the subie handles fluid to its cooler. And if they can't/won't do a "power flush", they probably won't do a simple pan drain (only gets approx. half of the fluid).

There's nothing wrong with changing the fluid. What most knowledgeable A/T mechanics will tell you is NOT to have it flushed. Back flushing is especially a no-no. Flushing tends to break loose and stir up crud that is best left where it is. Just changing the fluid and filter doesn't do that and gets rid of the crud that is floating around in the fluid.

ok, so how much can i drain out from the pan ,by just removing the drain plug ? it does not leak or drip , or should i remove the pan and clean out the screan , also use redline

Wyou will drain about half by pulling the drain plug. (Most of the rest is in the torque converter.) I have had the pan off of several 3ATs, and I have yet to see a reason to clean or replace the screen. I have removed the screen to disassemble and clean the valve body, bu the screen itself should be OK unless the pan is damaged and/or you know the screen is damaged.
