wesley willis
hello, this is probably my third post or so, but i've been lurking on these boards for a while now. im 19, and have owned my sube for about 6 months now. 88 gl hatch, 2wd at(i wanted 5 speed awd but the price was right), carb, ea81. anyways, i start the car up, it starts purring, then about 5 minutes later i can hear the faint beginnings of a squeak. when i give it a bit of gas it gets loud, but if i give it more gas, it goes away. even more so when the car is actually moving. if im going about 30-40 km/h, the sound can be heard, but not when im going faster then that. i doubt its the timing belt, because there doesn't seem to be one on my engine. do ea81s have a timing gear in the flywheel housing or something? if i'm being vague just let me know and i'll do the best i can to elaborate further. thanks. MorganM
Just listening with your ear under the hood or in the cabin is usually futile. Buy yourself a Mechanics Stethiscope (aka: needle stethiscope) and start probing around for the culprit. There are so many things under the hood that can sqeek, squak, tap, clack, clunk, chirp, and such that it's hard to track down with out the stethiscope. Subi81
Ya lots of things can make that noise. Might want to check your accessory belts. Altinator bearings If you have AC check the idler pully bearing. Its the really small one mounted lower down on the engine.
Humble Nuto 53
i will guess its alternator/air compressor belt squeal.... more gas heats it up and it grabs.... betcha both belts are shiny and may even have cracks on the pully side... replace em and make em tight, but not too tight... should deflect about an inch across a foot of belt..
