just as the title says..... car has 137k on it. It got a new fuel filter on sunday and the airfilter is fairly new. the plug wires look fairly new but are definately not new (at most a year old i'd say) and the plugs are NGK's that look fairly fresh but not new either. I have only had the car about 1k miles.

 

here is what it does... I am driving along and it is just fine but if I get to a small grade and give it a little it will buck and backfire and spit and sputter if I give it a lot it gets more violent...it doesn't matter what gear I'm in (stick) it will do it and it seems not to be really RPM dependant either. I had it doing it at 5.5k tonight just as I have had it do it also at 2.5k tonight. The tach needle never jumps or anything like that it is perfectly rock steady and of course no CEL either.

 

Car is a 1995 1.8 impreza coupe AWD stick if you didn't gather that already...

 

I'm wondering about ground issues but I am not going to jump head first into that unless someone else thinks that might be the issue.

 

Please help.....I am about to do this... :banghead: since the subaru's haven't been treating me nice here lately.... you know that liberty CRD is looking nicer and nicer everyday here lately....

car had about 3 gal. in it when it started and when I got home that day I filled it up. Tank has about 40 miles on it now and still doing it. Dry gas isn't a bad idea though....

Gary: you have a new PM on xt6 from me.

does it have a hotwire MAF? check the wires of the MAF that reside in the air flow. they are very very very thin and difficult to see, can really only see them if you remove the sensor. if one of the hair thin wires breaks then you'll have problems just like you're mentioning. or swap in a known good unit.

 

battery/charging nice and tight?

Bucking, in my experience is most often an ignition system problem. Most often the plug wires. I know you say they look OK, but don't count on it.

 

There is still the "distributor" on top the manifold and the igniter at the firewall to consider before you can ignore the ignition system.
