Brake Squeek?

Featured Replies

So I'm looking at a 92 loyale that is in pretty decent shape with 106k miles. Well it's got this squeeking on the passenger side wheel area... It's a consistant noise that happens every time the wheel completes a full rotation. At first I thought it was probably just the brakes but when I applied pressure to the brakes the noise didn't change one bit. Does anyone know what else this could be? It's at a dealership that is a ways away so I can't do too much research on the car itself... Thanks for the ideas.

Sounds like wheel bearings.

Does it change or clunk when you turn? Go from full lock one side to full lock the other and listen for noises.

if it doesnt change sound when you step on the brakes it might be a wheel bearing. or still could be brakes, some pads have a little metal spring or scraper

that drags on the rotor to tell you its time to spend some money. the scraper

usually doesnt change when the brakes are applied (your experience may vary)

sometimes if the axel nut is loose you can get a brake squeak that changes

when you turn the car...

might even be coming from a loose belt or dying alternator or waterpump,

does the sound only occur while moving/does sound change with motor rpm

either way i would expect the repair to be cheap and home made

My vote is for wheel bearings or potentially a bent dust cover (the metal piece behind the brake disc) rubbing on the disc. It could also be a rock caught somewhere in the brake assembly.

i have a loud squeal when i brake and turn left....thought it was the brakes. turns out i need a new axle. :). i'm REALLY looking forward to changing it, the two wreckers in this town have no subaru parts at all. looks like i'm buying the donor car down the road from my house for 200 bucks.
