Actually, a 2x4 is 1-1/2 x 3-1/2, and has been so for many, many years, mostly to save wood. Same as a 4 x 4 is actually 3 1/2 each way.

 

Wood won't shrink that much when dried.

 

We screwed the pooch when we didn't go metric in the early 70's, and from what I understand, it was the auto and building industry that was holding the tail out of the way.

 

I love the metric system. When I go back to the states and have to look at the odometer, the miles go by sooooooo damn slow.

 

And I love my metric vise grips...

Thats why I like going to Canada! I can do 100! 100 SOMETHING! But it is still 100!
