ahh!!! my legacy's ticking more then normal, gonna have to try the seafoam.if it was a oil pump problem, wouldn't the oil light come on.or does it only come on when there's low oil not low pressure.

i was running 20w/50 and back about a month ago when i changed the oil pan,i switched to 10w/40 and the ticking is really getting annoying.

gonna pick up seafoam today and give it a go.

The light comes on at 2.1psi, which is insanely low.

If there's air or poop in the oil, the hyraulic lash adjusters act up. It's apparently very common on Subaru engines. Definately Seafoam it and see what happens.

I had a minor case of the same tick, which spontaneously went away shortly before my last oil change (coinciding with the onset of colder weather). I Seafoamed it anyway, and it hasn't been back since.

well i seafoamed it yesterday and at first it seamed to shut it up but them i noticed it again, couple hours later when i had to restart the engine and today it's doing it.

:banghead: maybe i gave her the wrong nickname.it should of been ticky

should i have used the whole can?

1/4 past is nothing to be concerned about.

oil light is of no use here.

treatments to your oil will only work if the noise is valve train related. this may take awhile, it's not always a magical instant trick. it may take time to fully free up a sticky or frozen lifter. keep adding seafoam, MMO or ATF at every oil change.

if the oil pump is to blame additives will not cure anything. you will need to reseal your oil pump and tighten the rear backing plate bolts (with locktite too).

if the noise is really bad and the motor isn't in horrific shape then a compression test just might show you where the issue lies. or use a mechanics stethoscope. the idea is to try to narrow down the sound. is it all over the engine? both sidse of the engine? or just one cylinder? if it's one cylinder only then it's definitely an HLA at that cylinder. if it's all over then it's more likely oil supply related..though you could have more than one sticking HLA, but that becomes less likely the more instances you find.

standard process is to try treatments first because it's cheap and anyone can do it, open can and dump in. after that you'll need to consider looking into resealing your oil pump or replacing HLA's.

a compression test can also show a bad HLA if it's bad enough. you'll get way bad compression...even down to no compression if it's completely frozen and not doing anything in the right position.

thanks for the heads up on what else to do.the ticking is really driving me nuts(only when i don't have the radio on)

Well,Well,Well....guess what caused the ticking?

after fixing my spark-plug problem (plug blow-out) apparently the plugs were loose and that's what was ticking.now that the new ones are in an all tightened.no more ticking

Wow that brought on a flashback...

the very first Subaru I ever test drove made this weird ticking (valve-ish) noise... the "salesman" said that ALL Subarus do that, it was a subaru noise....

I looked under the hood when we got back to the car lot to find one loose spark plug. I hand tightened it & the noise disappeared... so did I.

Have been a fond Subaru owner since.

Later,

Peter
