It's an abomination manufacturers used as an interim to passive passenger restraints. The shoulder belt is separate from the lap belt. It's anchored on the inboard side of the seat. There is a track along the door that runs roughly from above where the mirror mounts to the back of the door. When the door is closed, a motor runs the belt from its forward position to the rear.

 

You're lucky you don't have them. It's the main reason I dumped the 91 rather than the 86.

And sometimes when you open the door and try to quickly sit up you can't because the motor didn't activate. What fun!

I think that refers to a rediculous thing that involves a motor and track in the door frame or A-pillar that sort of puts the shoulder belt on you when close the door. Or tries to strangle you with it as the case usually is. You still have to buckle the lap belt part, so I'm not sure how much good it does, but it's a design to force people to wear their belts. It seems that alot of early 90's cars here had them.

 

I don't have any problem putting my on my belt myself, so I consider it to be an annoyance, and moving parts often break.

My favorite is when you get out of the car too quickly and hang yourself.

I think it's worse than a regular seat belt because it automatically does the shoulder belt but not the lap belt. The lap belt is also harder to reach because you have to fish it out from between the seat and the door. So the lazy ones of us won't bother to put the lap belt on and will be injured worse in a crash.

It's a PITA, but it got me a few bucks off my insurance.

you push a button and it'll disconnect just like a regular belt. so you can leave it "up" and just manually disconnect everytime like a normal belt if you don't like the automatic function of it. you just have two movements instead of one since the lap belt is seperate. all XT6's have them, i've never had any issues with them not working. they do occassionally do the strangle thing. release it and put it back or open the door again.

i call those the "stranglers" cuz i've seen so many people get hung by them. its funny at first,but yeah, not so funny if they can't get out.
