Need Advice, Knuckle onto Axle?

Featured Replies

I finally got all the new bearings greased up along with the seals for the front wheel bearings. They are pressed into the knuckle, but now I can't get the knuckle back on the axle. I don't have the special tool that the FSM suggests using. I need this car to drive back to school tonight, so if anyone has a trick or suggestion, please lay it on me!

usually the axle will go far enough through the knuckle to get the axle nut on. After that, I place a big crescent wrench right by the seal on the knuckle to pry off of. This protects the seal. Then I use a claw hammer prying on the wrench to pull the axle through, occasionally screwing in the axle nut, etc, to get more leverage.

good luck (had to type quick, dinners ready :) )

Make sure the spacer is lined up and then push from the inboard side by hand. It may help to have a friend take a 6" socket extension and hold it inside the bearings as you push the axle thru to keep the spacer lined up and everything from binding.

I've used the old axle, put both threaded sections on the same castle nut, and used the old axle as a slide hammer to pull the new one through.

you can put the doj end on and feed through the spindle end as far as it will go. then you can tap on the knucke with a rubber mallet or hammer to get it throught enough for the axle nut
