November 29, 200520 yr Just drove home the new '96 OBW. Clutch takes a lot more effort than our Honda. Is this indicative of Subaru clutches? In high school I drove my parents '87 GL10 and I remember that clutch was a chore to work once I got a '83 Mazda for my own. My two Legacy's have been auto so I haven't delt with a subie clutch in years.
November 29, 200520 yr Well, different cars do have different feel to the clutch, but I'd think about replacing the clutch cable (does the '96 still use a cable, or were they all hydraulic by then?). I did that on my '87 GL, and it made a world of difference.
November 30, 200520 yr I just got a '99 OBW, traded in a 2004 Nissan pickup (needed a back seat more often than I need to haul stuff) and I noticed that the clutch is stiffer on th OBW than it was on the truck.
November 30, 200520 yr in the newer Subarus the clutch is heavy. Soobies always had a heavy clutch, but at that age check the hydraulic cylinders as it may be close to time to replace them. nipper
November 30, 200520 yr Well, different cars do have different feel to the clutch, but I'd think about replacing the clutch cable (does the '96 still use a cable, or were they all hydraulic by then?). i drove a 97 legacy gt wagon awhile back with a hydraulic clutch and can only say this-i'll stick with my cabled clutches thank you.didn't like the feel of the pedal when releasing the pedal. my 94 legacys clutch feels fine.you might have to just get used to it like i did or adjust it. unless yours is hydraulic one then ...i don't know.
November 30, 200520 yr i wonder.... if its hydraulic it should be easy enough to get a differnt size slave cylinder to make the clutch lighter... Just an idea nipper
November 30, 200520 yr Most manual Subarus have a Hill Lock on them, once its applied, the heat transfer on the clutch plate due throw out bearing, engine's heat because in that area is very hot causing the clutch plate to stiffen. Thats my theory! Oh yeah, I've driven other Liberty same as mine and all clutches are different, mine is reasonable (not too heavy/light) and I am happy with mine. Cheers AP
