cleaning up neglected alloys (?)

Featured Replies

how do you clean alloys? How clean can you expect to get them? These have been sitting in a junkyard for a while and have green algae like stains on them.

I used a brillo pad, a few pads of steel wool, some harsh cleaning agent i found in the closet.

The other day i was at the hardware store, and they had a tube of "aluminum polish" on sale, so i picked it up. Havent tried it yet, but when i do i'll update everyone.

A long time ago i spent something like 10.00 for Mothers mag and wheel cleaner 4 oz jar although that stuff works great,

what i found out and just like subarujunkie said SOS Pads do every bit as good and a whole lot cheaper

Use a very fine body/paintwork rubbing compound. If they're really scratched/oiled, start with a coarser grit. I use No. 7 brand orange body compound for the coarse work and polish up with Turtle Wax Extra-Fine.

sounds good. although I thought that a brillo par might be a little harsh? But if you guys say so.

I have used them to clean alloy wheels too, they are great for the initial cleaning, then follow up with a good polish to really make 'em shine. and if you want to keep that shine for a while, use some sort of sealer after polishing.

good luck.:D
