December 7, 200520 yr Took my alternator out yesterday and took it to Autozone. And they tested it = good. I put it back in the car and its fine for about 70 miles... then starts acting up again... hmm? What could it be and does anyone have an alternator they might trade for soemthing I have because I be broke.
December 7, 200520 yr What exactly is the problem? If it's not charging properly, you could have a bad connection or a bad fusible link that's just barely passing current and gets worse when it warms up. I've also had a bad fusible link cause high voltmeter readings and all sorts of other wierd stuff. Bad grounds also can cause any number of problems.
December 7, 200520 yr Author well it started with dummy lights staying on until I rev up the motor... but then the lights will come on, from time to time.... and now I'm hearing a humming noise... So I'm thinking this suckers shot.
December 7, 200520 yr I've dumped way too much $ into replacing the diodes in the rectifier (twice) and a new stator (oem Hitachi alternator). I understand Bosch rebuilds are available online. Sorry I don't have a link.
December 7, 200520 yr Here is a link for a Bosch Rebuilt. They are about 60.00 dollars. I put one in my car about a month ago and so far no problems. Got rid of the glowing indicator lights too. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/alternators~pop.html
December 7, 200520 yr One of the alternators that i had was overcharging bad but everytime i got it down to the shop to get it tested and verified that it was in fact the alternator it would act normal cause in the distance from my house to the shop it would warm up and everything would be good for awhile. grumble Ended up replacing it anyways and the problem went away. It could be the opposite of this i suppose. When you alternator is cool everything is ok but once its warm all hell breaks loose? That would be my guess.
December 8, 200520 yr If you open up your old alternator I'm sure you'll find your brushes are worn out. I've purchased replacements at an auto electric garage in Denver for about $2.00/set.
