My brother wanted me to post this problem for him.The car is an '87 carbed wagon 5sp w/dr.So the problem is that the egr light is on,on the dash.Really hard for me to diagnose because he is in Alaska and me in Co. He said he just cleaned the egr about a month ago and checked the pcv valve. For some reason he said that he thinks it's the EGR control solenoid.I am thinking that it is something like maybe the TVV(therm vac valve).Tell me what you think it may be.Any help you could offer would be great.Because whatever parts he is going to need I am going to pull at the local JY and send it to him.Thankyou.

The EGR light is mileage driven. I comes on to get you to go to the dealer for service, regardless of the condition of the EGR. If you look under the dash, up high behind the fuse box, you'll see a connector that's not connected to anything. It's either blue or green, if I remember right. Next to it is a similar connector that's connected to a mating connector. Disconnect the one that's connected and connect it to the one that's not connected, and the light will go off.

yes he is correct. 60,000 and 120,000 the egr light will turn on, telling you to inspect/clean/replace the egr valve. There is a green and blue set of T connectors behind the kickpanel directly above your clutch foot. If its plugged in green to green, you would switch it to green/blue. if its green/blue you would switch it to green to green.

 

Dont worry about cleaning the egr valve. IF the car runs good, dont mess with it.

Thats is a pretty cheesey way to get somebody to bring their subaru back to the dealership just to get some moron to climb under your dash for 30 seconds.

Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime....

well no one ever said subaru dealerships weren't rip offs. Just like when they have you bring your car in so they can add a "conditioner" to your air conditioning pump.

The real reason behind it was EPA certification. They had to go at least 100,000 miles for certification, and the way Subaru got the EPA to buy off on it was to install a light that would bring you back to the dealer so they could check it.
