steering wheel "locking" @ low speed

Featured Replies

I own an '01 Outback and while backing out of the driveway, the steering wheel had limited movement. Felt as if the steering locked similar to turning the key off. After restarting the car, everything was fine. Anyone hear of such a thing and is this the beginning of certain trouble?

have you checked the level of the Power Steering Fluid? it may be low, causing the PS to not work. Also check the belt tension to the pump. That is the only way I have heard of any Subaru "locking" the steering at low speed. not a lock, really, just real stiff.

Yah, the fluid level is ok but I just had the belts replaced. Seems coincidental that the belt tensioner may be loose.

CHeck the universal joint in the sterring column. This is typical of it starting to seize up. It was just coincidence, or the shock of restarting the engine knocked it loose, but this is a GET IT CHECKED NOW kind of thing

That was my first impression and made me a bit nervous. I'll look into it tomorrow. Thanks.
