January 17, 200620 yr hey guys , can anyone tell my engine in my 88 gl by the vin ? if so can you tell me how. im picking it up wed and im looking up parts for it but not sure what it has. i got my title with the vin. thanx guys
January 17, 200620 yr an 88 gl should have the EA82 SPFI. which translates to 1.8 OHC<Over Head Cam> Single Piont Fuel Injection.
January 17, 200620 yr As long as it is a sedan, wagon or XT, it is an EA82, either SPFI or MPFI/Turbo. What else would you like to know?
January 17, 200620 yr If its a brat its an EA-81, OHV, if its got 4 doors its an EA-82, OHC. If its a coupe/hatchback it could be either, the hatchback is EA-81, and the coupe is EA-82. If you post up the vin there's got to be someone here that could decode it for you.
January 17, 200620 yr Author thanx for the quick repl guys, its a 88 wagon 4wd jf2an53b5jf409823. anything else the vin can tell me? thanx again guys
January 17, 200620 yr Author hey wet, any info on the 4wd. its my first 4wd sub. i had a glxt non turbo once , so im new with the 4 wd on subarus.and what with the timing belts? can i do em myself? have mech experience but not on subarus. thanx
January 17, 200620 yr as far as the 4wd drive goes there great you can engage and disengage at any speed. and you drive as fast as you want with it engaged. make sure you don't try to engage the 4wd when your front tires are slipping let the front tires match the speed of the rear tires before engaging. the timing belts are not hard but make sure you read all directions thoughly and follow them. pay close attention to how you are soppose to line up the first belt and then spin the crank 360 degress before putting the secound belt on<my eyes skipped that part my first time moter won't start very well>. all in all not to difficult
January 18, 200620 yr Author yes it does humble, thanx Looks like a 88 GL Wagon 4WD, Auto Trans, 1800cc EA82, SPFI. Does that help?
