Temp gauge not working-need help

Featured Replies

I've got a 97' OBW, and my problem is no reading on the temp gauge. engine not running hot its just not picking up the temp reading at all. Reading my Haynes manual but still not sure where to begin. Is it a relay thing or electronic control module- no clear diagram on where that is even located. any tips or advice?

Four basic possibilities:

1. Defective sender.

2. Defective meter.

3. Blown fuse.

4. Bad connection.

You might want to spring for a factory manual.

you more than likely need a new coolant temp sensor

they dont last "forever"

although they typically last a good long time.

EJ22 engine has two coolant sensors; one for the ECU and one for the temp guage. Make sure you get the correct one.

If like my 91 coolant sensor located on pass side under intake manifold, a pain to get to. I would unplug the connector, or if lucky find it has worked loose, and then try subtituting an appropriate resistor in place of the sensor and see if the guage moves. That way if the sensor was good, and the guage is bad(or wire is broken between the two) you have not wasted time to remove an item that is a PIA to get in and out.
