Water Pump's like to drip

Featured Replies

I just bought my second subaru GL and the water pump started dripping from the whole in the very bottom of the water pump. This exact same thing happened to my last subaru and I replaced the pump (The rings wore through about a week later) I still have the busted sube with a bran new water pump. My new subaru has a fan connected to the water pump but the water pump on the broken subaru does not have a fan connecter on it. Can I use the water pump without a fan in place of one with a fan, there by taking the mechanical fan off and only having an electric one, like my last subaru. The car already runs well below the middle of the thermometer and the only difference between the engines is the turbo. Any one KNow? Thanks in advance

Yes you can, if the height from the base of the pump to the end of the shaft is the same. There's about a 5mm difference in them, and the belts won't line up.

If the new pump is shorter, you can shim it out, but if it's longer, you're out of luck.

The pumps do have different part numbers, but they both work on the engine side the same. Only difference is the fan I believe. Looks like you have to remove it anway, so try it and see.

The pump on Factory installed A/C is the shorter one, 104mm hub height, non-A/C, (or Dealer installed A/C), pump is 110mm hub height.

Remember reading awhile back of someone using washers to space the pulley out, so they could use the shorter one on their engine. Should work.....
