Crappy gearing with larger tires?

Featured Replies

So with the alloys, my tires have about 1" more diameter than my other tires... is this enough to make the gearing suck on the highway? on my way through VT today on the highway it'd just shift going up hills, when it usually doesnt... blah!

i was thinking maybe it's just the tires... OR the engine is being starved for air, due to the snorkle.... i dunno...

Riding I-91? I had to drop to third to hold 65 on some of those hills in my loyale with 30's. Tires eat up gears easy, but you get used to screaming the engine in lower gears to get steam up hills.

Nah, i was heading from Swanton VT, down through Mid NH all on I98... those hills arn't nearly as bad as I91....

since i went from stock tires to the 5X100 bolt pattern and 1'' larger diameter rims and tires, i definately noticed an increase in time to get up to speed, but the gears go farther and i can cruise at a slightly lower rpm. but i still have the stock exhaust restricting the EJ22, so i think ill regain some power. i cant imagine how you guys deal with 27-29'' tires with the stock EA82, i couldnt do it. but keep in mind, our cars are like tipped over refrigerators on wheels, lots of drag and not a whole lot of power.
